Today has seen the launch of London Tech Week, a celebration of all things tech and innovation; tonight will see the Trainline event, Demystified: the real reasons there aren’t enough women in tech… and what we can do about it’.

The event will be hosted by TechCrunch’s Editor Mike Butcher and will bring us speakers including:

Clare GilmartinTrainline CEO

Amali de Alwis – Code First: Girls CEO

Chi Onwurah MP –  Shadow Minister for Industrial Strategy, Science and Innovation

…who will all be discussing the lack of women in digital and more importantly why this is an issue that we are even having to address.  We know that women are underrepresented and lacking in digital industries, but we are less clear as to exactly where this steamed from and how it developed.  These women from across various industries will dive into and explore the opportunity for more women working in digital jobs and industries.

Trainline partnered with Code First: Girls earlier this year and together pledged to help 20,000 women in the UK to learn to code by 2020 to help to close this gender gap. Upskilling and further development is the perfect way to get women confident and prepared for entering tech industries.

The #IAmRemarkable campaign and events, which Google drive, are a strong tool for empowering women in underrepresented groups, such as digital and tech industries, and encouraging them to speak with confidence about their own achievements.  This is a topic that the Google Digital Garages regularly explore with their #IAmRemarkable events; the next event will be this Thursday in the Birmingham Digital Garage, and you can sign up here.
