This week saw the phenomenal tech giant, Google, turn 20. With huge congratulations to the company and our eagerness bursting to know what else they have in store for us in years to come, we take a look back over the last 20 years of Google.
Remember back in the 90’s when we had the choice of Ask Jeeves, Yahoo, Google or many others… ? The age of the search engine began, bringing together simplified, streamlined ways for us to find those websites that had started popping up on the internet since its introduction in the early 80’s.
Now, there’s really little competition when it comes to the world of search (and beyond). It was on September 4th 1998 that Google became an incorporation, but the journey for Google founders, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, began 3 years previously in 1995 when they met at Stanford University and began building Google, or should we say ‘Backrub’, as it was then named!
“ The name was a play on the mathematical expression for the number 1 followed by 100 zeros and aptly reflected Larry and Sergey’s mission ‘to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful.’ “ – GOOGLE.com
As many of today’s true success stories have, Google then became a product of Silicon Valley investors; Google is now not only a multi billion dollar company, offering hundreds of products from Gmail to Adwords, to Google Pixel, but has even become a recognised verb in the Oxford English Dictionary. The company employs over 60,000 individuals over 50 different countries, gaining a vast majority of their revenue from Ads in one form or another, the most lucrative business models for online businesses; monetizing search really propelled Google and revolutionised the whole world of advertising and online marketing.
Google have hands in so many areas of industry, development and collaboration, their parent company Alphabet work not only on digital developments but on projects such as improving urban mobility to trying to extend the human lifespan.
So, over the next 20 years we know that we can look forward to some incredibly exciting, innovative and life altering developments!
